The Mid-Year Audit: Is Your Illinois Business Missing These Summer HR Updates?

When the weather warms up, it is easy to focus on summer schedules and seasonal operations. But mid-year is also when local employment laws shift in Illinois. If you haven’t reviewed your payroll rates, break policies, and break room posters since January, now is the time to run a quick mid-year audit before minor oversights turn into costly penalties.

1. Local Minimum Wage Bumps

While the statewide minimum wage holds at $15.00/hour for 2026, local municipalities adjust on July 1st:

Chicago: The minimum wage rose to $17.05/hour for employers with 4 or more workers.

Cook County: The rate increased to $15.40/hour.

If you have hybrid or mobile workers who spend time within Chicago or unincorporated Cook County, verify that your payroll system tracks location-based hours accurately.

2. Double-Check Your ODRISA Tracking

Under the One Day Rest in Seven Act (ODRISA), non-exempt employees must receive at least 24 consecutive hours of rest in every 7 consecutive days, along with mandatory meal breaks for shifts exceeding 7.5 hours.

With summer vacation schedules causing staff shortages, overtime and consecutive-day coverage can easily trigger non-compliance.

3. Poster Updates

State and local labor boards frequently update mandatory notices mid-year. Ensure your physical breakrooms (and remote employee portals) feature the latest 2026 notices for paid leave, minimum wage, and discrimination rules.

A 20-minute mid-year check on payroll rates and schedule logs keeps your business safe from wage-and-hour audits while you focus on finishing the year strong.
